Shreyas Iyer sustained a blunt injury to his abdomen while fielding during the third ODI against Australia on 25th October 2025, resulting in a laceration of his spleen with internal bleeding. The injury was promptly identified, and the bleeding was immediately arrested following a minor procedure. He has undergone appropriate medical management for the same.

He is now stable and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, along with specialists in Sydney and India, are pleased with his recovery, and he has been discharged from the hospital today.

The BCCI extends its heartfelt gratitude to Dr Koroush Haghighi and his team in Sydney, along with Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala in India, for ensuring Shreyas received the best treatment for his injury. Shreyas will continue to stay in Sydney for his follow-up consultations and will return to India once he is deemed fit to fly.

What exactly happened to Shreyas Iyer?

Iyer sustained this devastating injury during the third and final ODI between India and Australia at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground in Australia on Saturday, October 25.

Harshit Rana bowled the 34th over of the Australian innings, and Alex Carey threw his arms at it, possibly looking to loft it over mid-off or extra cover. However, he could only slice it towards backward point where Iyer was stationed. The Mumbai cricketer turned around and ran back before timing his jump to a tee and holding onto the catch.

India's ODI vice-captain landed awkwardly on his left side and looked in serious pain. The physio came out to check on him before he was helped out of the field.

He couldn't play any further part in the clash. The 30-year-old was subsequently shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where the treatment procedures were started promptly at St. Vincent's Private Hospital, Sydney.

Iyer was dismissed for a 24-ball 11 in the first ODI in Perth, but in the second ODI in Adelaide, he scored a gritty 61 off 77 deliveries.
