Memorable first Test wins: who did India, Australia and England register their first wins against

Ireland has registered their first win in Tests as they beat Afghanistan by six-wicket in Abu Dhabi. It is their first Test win after attaining the status in the format.

Let us have a look at when the other major Test-playing nations have attained their first wins against whom?

India1st win in 25th match

It was against England in the 1951-52 series The Men in Blue registered their first win. They have beaten the visitors by an innings and eight runs at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. In the Test, Polly Umrigar (130*) and Pankaj Roy (111) sizzled with centuries.

Pakistan1st win 2nd match

Pakistan won their first Test against India at the University Ground in Lucknow when they beat arch rivals by an innings and 43 runs. Nazar Mohammad (124*) scores a gritty ton coming in as an opener to hold the innings and give the visitors a decent first-innings lead which laid the foundation

for the win.

Sri Lanka1st win in 14th match

Another neighboring country Sri Lanka also registered their first win against India. They have beaten the visitors by 149 runs at P Sara Oval in Colombo in 1985. Amal Silva's first innings 111 runs helped them to post a solid first innings score which played a major part in the famous victory.

England1st win in 2nd match

England toured Australia in 1877 and lost the first game. However, in a low-scoring affair, they registered their first win by four wickets at the iconic MCG. The hosts were pushed on the backfoot in the first innings itself when Allen Hill picked up four wickets and bowled Australia to 122 which they could never recover from in the Test.

New Zealand1st win in 45th match

While there were a lot of draws there were also humiliating defeats before the Kiwis beat West Indies by innings and 190 runs at Eden Park in Auckland by 190 runs in the summer of 1956. Though New Zealand was ahead in the game for the most part defending 268 in the final innings against a strong West Indian batting lineup Harry Cave picked up four wickets to bowl the Carrieban side out for a mere 77.
