Delhi: Indian ODI team vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is admitted to a hospital in Sydney and is currently undergoing treatment in the ICU. While playing against Australia in the third ODI, he suffered a serious rib injury, due to which there was internal bleeding.

During the third match played in Sydney on Saturday, Iyer took a brilliant catch of Alex Carey. He ran backwards to take the catch from backward point, but during this he got injured on his left rib. When his health deteriorated after returning from the field, he was immediately taken to the hospital.

Reports revealed that Iyer was bleeding internally near his ribs. Seeing the serious situation, the doctors immediately admitted him to the ICU. According to the source, Iyer will be kept under observation in the hospital for two to seven days so that the infection can be prevented from spreading.

BCCI’s immediate action

Seeing Iyer’s condition, the team doctor and physio took him to the hospital without any delay. According to sources, now his condition is stable, but the situation could have been dangerous. He is a strong player and will recover soon.

Recovery may take more time

Initially it was expected that Iyer would return to the field in three weeks, but now his recovery may take longer. Doctors say that due to internal injuries it is difficult to give an exact date for his return at the moment.

31-year-old Shreyas Iyer will have to remain in a Sydney hospital for at least a week. At present he is not a part of the T20 team. BCCI’s medical team and specialist doctors from Sydney are jointly taking care of him.

In the medical update released by BCCI, it was told that Iyer has suffered an injury in the lower part of his left rib and the scan revealed that he has an injury in his spleen. Doctors said that he is stable and gradually improving. The Indian team doctor will stay in Sydney and monitor Iyer’s condition on a daily basis.
