The New Zealand cricketer Sophie Devine announced her ODI retirement after White Ferns had a disappointing campaign in the Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025.
She announced her retirement after the side’s final group stage games of the tournament. Devine announced that she would retire from Women’s ODI cricket after the conclusion of the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025.
She pulled down curtains on her career after leading New Zealand in the tournament, where she failed to deliver and take the team to the semi-finals.
Sophie Devine who made ODI debut in October 2006 against Australia had evolved as one of the best all-rounder ever to be played for New Zealand.
In 19 year long career, Devine represented New Zealand in 159 ODIS finishing as the second most capped player after Suzie Bates.
Devine finished as the third highest run-scorer for New Zealand after Suzie Bates (5936) and Amy Satterthwaite (4639).
Speakin on her retirement, “Well, I’m not retiring from T20s just yet. I thought it would be a bit weird if they gave me a guard of honour and then I walk out for the next game. Maybe I should just keep doing it,” said Sophie Devine.
“I guess it’s hard because I had made my announcement so early and everyone knows about it and they probably wanted to recognise it… or else I would have liked to just have gone under the radar and gone about my business like any other day,” she said.
“They probably trapped me a little bit there at the end. I didn’t have too many options… but, again, just so cool to be able to share that,” Devine added.
Speaking on the match against England in the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025, Devine added, “It was nice to be able to at least finish my career with the ball in hand. Jones could have at least patted one back to me… I know Heather (Knight) just walked away (after Devine got her trapped in front), which I appreciate.”
“Today was always going to end at some stage. I just thought I was going to get a bit of my bowling. I got pumped for four. So, a bit of a reality check for me, just to see me on my way. But again, cricket doesn’t owe you anything,” concluded Sophie Devine.
