Delhi Capitals endured a mixed Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 campaign that began with immense promise but ended in disappointment. After starting with four consecutive wins under Axar Patel’s leadership, DC lost momentum midway through the season and eventually missed out on playoff qualification, finishing fifth with 15 points. With another season of unmet expectations, the franchise management is likely to make tough calls before the IPL 2026 auction to rebuild a more balanced and consistent side. Several under-performing players could face the axe as Delhi aim to boost their auction purse and strategically target impactful performers for next season.

Five players Delhi Capitals might release before IPL 2026 auction

  1. Jake Fraser-McGurk:

Australian sensation Jake Fraser-McGurk was brought back to the DC squad during the IPL 2025 mega auction for ₹9 crore using the Right-To-Match (RTM) card following his earlier release. Expectations were sky-high considering his explosive batting potential showcased in domestic cricket. However, the young right-hander failed to deliver consistently in IPL 2025, scoring only 55 runs in six appearances at a strike rate of 105.77.

He struggled with swing in Indian conditions and could not replicate his aggressive approach. His inability to anchor innings or provide quick starts made DC bench him after a few outings. With better overseas opening options likely to emerge in the 2026 auction, Delhi might opt to release Fraser-McGurk to free up finances and target a more experienced top-order batter. Across his overall IPL career, the Australian has scored 385 runs in 15 matches at a strike rate nearing 200, but inconsistency remains a concern.

  1. Mukesh Kumar:

Indian pacer Mukesh Kumar was retained via RTM for ₹8 crore during the previous mega auction, but he struggled to meet expectations in IPL 2025. Although he picked up 12 wickets in 12 matches, his economy rate of 10.32 proved costly, particularly in the death overs where he leaked runs regularly. In a team that already lacked experienced finishers with the ball, Mukesh’s inability to close tight contests hurt Delhi’s campaign.

The management might now look beyond him and bring in an Indian pacer with greater control and powerplay effectiveness. Since making his IPL debut in 2023, Mukesh has taken 36 wickets in 32 games with an economy of 10.39, but Delhi could consider investing in a younger bowler, who can offer better variations at the death.

  1. Faf du Plessis:

Veteran South Africa opener Faf du Plessis was a surprise addition to Delhi Capitals’ squad in IPL 2025 for ₹2 crore. His signing was aimed at adding experience and leadership depth to the batting unit. However, the 40-year-old struggled with form and fitness, playing only nine matches and scoring 202 runs at an average of 22.44. His strike rate of 123.92 indicated a visible decline in his ability to accelerate against high-quality pace or spin attacks.

Delhi’s team management could consider parting ways with Du Plessis before IPL 2026 to open a valuable overseas slot and bring in a younger top-order batter. Given the physically demanding nature of the tournament and Du Plessis’s age, this release would be a strategic move despite his stellar IPL legacy of 4773 runs in 154 games at a strike rate of 135.78.

  1. Mohit Sharma:

Delhi Capitals also roped in experienced pacer Mohit Sharma for ₹2.2 crore in IPL 2025 with hopes he would bring control and composure to the bowling attack. However, the veteran failed to make an impact, securing just two wickets in eight matches at an economy of 10.28.

His inability to execute slower deliveries effectively diminished his value during crunch moments. With IPL teams increasingly focusing on youthful pace options capable of delivering at 140+ speeds, Mohit’s decline in pace and rhythm could lead to his release. Given his career record of 134 wickets in 120 matches, Delhi may decide it’s time to refresh their fast-bowling pool.

  1. Dushmantha Chameera:

Sri Lankan speedster Dushmantha Chameera was a cost-effective buy for ₹75 lakh, but his returns were underwhelming. The right-arm pacer picked just four wickets in six matches, conceding at an economy of 11.40. His rhythm and consistency were erratic, and his inability to contain batters during powerplay overs made him a weak link.

Considering Delhi’s need for dependable overseas pacers, Chameera’s release before IPL 2026 seems likely. With several quality pacers such as Gerald Coetzee and Lockie Ferguson potentially available in the upcoming auction, Chameera might not retain his spot. So far, Chameera’s IPL record stands at 13 wickets in 19 games with an economy of 9.72.

Delhi’s restructuring strategy for IPL 2026

Delhi Capitals are expected to adopt a pragmatic strategy ahead of IPL 2026 by rebalancing their squad composition. The core Indian group featuring Patel, KL Rahul and Kuldeep Yadav is likely to remain intact. However, the franchise could pursue all-rounders and consistent finishers—an area they have struggled in over the past few years.

With the potential release of these five players, DC could free up close to ₹23 crore in their auction purse, which will be useful for bidding on marquee names. Delhi might also prioritize domestic uncapped stars who can adapt in different venues, strengthening both batting depth and bowling versatility.

The 2026 auction will be crucial as franchises move towards a new three-year cycle. Delhi Capitals’ approach will define whether they finally convert their star-studded lineup into a title-winning unit. After multiple seasons of near success, the upcoming retention and release decisions could shape their chances of lifting their maiden IPL trophy.
