With the next Cricket World Cup approaching in two years’ time, their potential participation has become a major talking point during India’s current ODI series against Australia.
Former Australian star Aaron Finch has offered his view on the ongoing debate about the futures of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. The two Indian veterans have already retired from both T20I and Test formats, continuing their careers only in ODIs. With the next Cricket World Cup approaching in two years’ time, their potential participation has become a major talking point during India’s current ODI series against Australia.
Though many believe they should play domestic cricket to retain form, Finch disagrees. He feels such matches won’t affect their selection or readiness, insisting it will ultimately come down to their personal desire and motivation to play.
“I don’t believe it’s essential for them to play a lot of domestic cricket. It wouldn’t really affect their chances or approach. Maybe playing an occasional game here and there just to stay sharp in a competitive setting would be enough,” Aaron Finch said.
“But you can be sure they’ll be putting in the hard work, hitting thousands of balls away from the spotlight. So, if the hunger remains and the performances back it up, there’s no reason they can’t continue,” he added.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are set to face a major challenge, with the duo turning 40 and 39, respectively, by the 2027 Cricket World Cup.
“I’d really like to see both of them play in the 2027 50-over World Cup. Ultimately, it will depend on the selectors, coaching staff, captain, and their own performances. When you have players with their level of experience, combined with the hunger of the next generation coming through, it creates great competition and strengthens the squad’s depth — and India certainly have that,” Finch mentioned.
“So, what challenges do they face? Most likely, it’s the sheer volume of cricket. That in itself brings plenty of difficulties. But you can be sure that neither of them will hold back. If they truly want to make it, and they’ve shown that desire, you know they’ll be putting in the hard work and hitting plenty of balls to get there,” he concluded.
