Shubman Gill has been named India's new ODI captain and will take over the reins from Rohit Sharma for the forthcoming three-match ODI series in Australia. This will be Gill's first series as captain of the ODI side, having previously captained the Test and T20I sides. The change in captaincy has been made with an eye on the ICC ODI World Cup in 2027.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also announced the squad for the five-match T20I series, which follows the ODIs, which are on similar lines to the recently concluded Asia Cup.
India's ODI squad: Shubman Gill (Captain), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer (VC), Axar Patel, KL Rahul (WK), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Despite Rohit being replaced as captain, he has been named in the ODI squad and returns to the Indian setup alongside fellow stalwart batter Virat Kohli.
Meanwhile, Gill, 26, is relatively inexperienced in captaincy in the 50-over form, having led only six times in List-A cricket with a 5:1 win-loss ratio. Having been named Test captain earlier this year, Gill began with a 2-2 series draw against England and just registered a thumping win in his sixth Test in charge against the West Indies by an innings and 140 runs.
Gill has played 55 ODIs so far in his career with 2775 runs and eight centuries to his name.
The rest of India's 15-man ODI squad includes KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel as the batsmen, while Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar and Axar Patel form the fulcrum of the all-rounders. On the bowling front, four frontline pacers have been included in the form of Mohammad Siraj, Arshdeep Singh and Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana, while Kuldeep Yadav will bring in his left-arm wrist spin.
From the Champions Trophy 2025 squad, Ravindra Jadeja has not been included in the squad while Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant are nursing their injuries. Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the ODI games.
Hardik Pandya misses out on the T20I squad due to injury.
The squad for the five T20Is is on the same lines as the one named for the Asia C, barring a couple of changes. Pandya, who had missed the final of the Asia Cup after walking off the ground in the Super Fours game against Sri Lanka, isn't part of the T20I squad, either and has been replaced by Nitish Kumar Reddy. Washington Sundar has also been included in the squad. Suryakumar Yadav will lead the side with Gill remaining vice-captain.
T20I squad: Suryakumar Yadav (C), Abhishek Sharma, Shubman Gill (VC), Tilak Varma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma (WK), Varun Chakaravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Sanju Samson (WK), Rinku Singh, Washington Sundar.
India and Australia will begin the series with the three ODIs from October 19 to 25, and the five T20Is will follow from October 29 to November 8.
