Amit Mishra said that Rohit Sharma’s removal from captaincy will work in favour of the star batter. The right-handed batter was sacked before the Australia series, with the selectors giving the armband to 26-year-old Shubman Gill. The Men in Blue won 42 out of the 56 matches they played under Rohit’s leadership.
Rohit’s last assignment as ODI skipper was the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year, and he has been away from international cricket since then. Mishra mentioned that the former skipper will play with freedom.
“Good for Rohit Sharma that the pressure of captaincy is not on him. He has the freedom and can focus on his performance and help the team to register victories. He can help new captain Gill,” Mishra told ANI.
Mishra also supported the decision to appoint Shubman Gill as captain in the fifty-over format. He feels captaincy will help Gill mature, and he can lead India for a long time. “It is good for Gill as he has been leading in the IPL as well. He has led top players across the globe. Since he has been given the responsibility, he will mature quickly and can lead India for a long time,” he added.
The Indian team will compete against Australia in the first ODI on October 19 in Perth.
