Delhi: In the 12th match of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025, England registered another big win by defeating Sri Lanka by 89 runs. R of Colombo. In this match played at Premadasa Stadium, Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to bowl first. England, batting first, scored 253 runs losing 9 wickets in 50 overs. Captain Nat Sciver-Brunt scored a brilliant century and scored an inning of 117 runs and took the team to a strong score. In reply, Sri Lankan team was all out for 164 in 45.4 overs.
England had a slow start, but Sciver-Brunt increased the run rate in the middle overs and strengthened the innings by scoring fast runs in the last overs.
Early wickets fell early in England’s innings, where Amy Jones conceded 11 runs. Tammy Beaumont played a quick inning of 32 runs which included 6 fours. Heather Knight scored 29 runs, while Emma Lamb added 13 runs. The most brilliant innings for the team was played by captain Nat Sciver-Brunt. He scored unbeaten 117 runs in 117 balls, which included 9 fours and 2 sixes.
Inoka Ranaweera bowled brilliantly for Sri Lanka. He took 3 wickets for 33 runs in 10 overs. Udeshika Prabodhini and Sugindika Kumari took 2 important wickets each, while Kavisha Dilhari got 1 success.
The Sri Lankan team, while chasing the target, had made a good start for a while. But, when the team had 18 runs, captain Chamari Atapattu had to leave the field due to cramps. She retired hurt and went out.
After this the team’s score was 89/1 and it seemed that the match could be exciting. But, then Sophie Eccleston came on the field, whose magical spin overpowered the Sri Lankan batsmen.
Eccleston took 4 wickets for just 6 runs in his first three overs. He sent Hasini Perera, Chamari Atapattu, Harshita Samarawickrama and Kavita Dilhari to the pavilion. His spell shattered Sri Lanka’s hopes.
Sri Lankan team was finally all out for 164 runs in 45.4 overs. Four bowlers took wickets for England. Eccleston took 4 wickets, Charlie Dean took 2, Nat Sciver-Brunt took 2 and Alice Capsey and Linsey Smith took 1 wicket each.
Nat Sciver-Brunt was named player of the match, she showed her class in batting and played an important role in helping the team win the match.
With this victory, the England team has reached the top of the points table by winning three consecutive matches in the tournament. At the same time, this was the second defeat of the Sri Lankan team, and one match was canceled due to rain.
