Star South African allrounder Marizanne Kapp on Monday became her country’s most-capped women’s ODI player, as she went past former batter Mignon du Preez to play her 155th ODI. Kapp, one of the most experienced active players in the world, has been in the business for 16 years now.
Notably, Kapp made her international and ODI debut at the 2009 Women’s World Cup, where South Africa lost all three of their matches.
Although Kapp didn’t have many notable performances in the next four years, the 2013 World Cup changed the course of her career. Although South Africa lost four of their five matches, Kapp created the record for the highest score by a South African cricketer at a women’s World Cup: 102* in Cuttack.
Kapp scored 198 runs in five matches in the 2013 World Cup, at an average of 49.5. She also picked up seven wickets, at an impressive economy of four.
A versatile athlete who has represented Eastern Province in netball and athletics as well, Kapp has been a driving force behind South Africa’s cricketing resurgence since 2014.
At the 2017 ODI World Cup, where South Africa reached the semifinals, Kapp played a major role. She was the second-highest wicket-taker in the tournament, behind compatriot and wife Dane van Niekerk, at 13.
At the 2022 ODI World Cup, where South Africa reached the semifinals again, Kapp scored 203 runs in eight matches, at an average of 40.6. She also picked up 12 wickets in seven bowling innings, at an impressive economy of 4.73.
Kapp has picked the most wickets against England, at 29, with her 5/45 in the 2022 World Cup one of her best bowling performances ever.
Kapp capped off her milestone game with the big wicket of New Zealand’s Suzie Bates on the first ball of the day.
