The selection of India’s ODI squad for the Australia series has caused a stir, with many decisions sparking debates online. Mohammad Kaif, the ex-India cricketer, was perplexed by the selection of Dhruv Jurel over Sanju Samson, despite the latter’s impressive track record. He openly criticised the selectors for omitting Samson.
“I feel Dhruv Jurel played brilliantly when he scored that century against the West Indies. He appeared very solid and organised, and he is undoubtedly the future of Indian cricket. He has the ability to score in every match. However, leaving Sanju Samson out was the wrong decision, as Sanju usually bats in the lower order, around number five or six, and for that position, he is a much better choice than Jurel,” Kaif said in a video.
Samson’s effectiveness against spinners makes him an important middle-order batter in ODIs. Kaif argued that the Kerala batter would have been a better option than Jurel for the No. 5 or No. 6 positions.
“At the moment, we tend to focus solely on current form, like how well Jurel has been playing recently, and in doing so, we overlook players like Sanju who have been performing consistently and truly deserve a place,” he added.
