Shubman Gill has been appointed as the captain of ODI and Test team. They are vice-captains in T20. Rahul Dravid recognized his leadership qualities in 2020-21 itself. Gill started her place in every format by starting from the Under-19 World Cup and has now become the leader of the next generation of Team India.
Delhi: Now a new beginning is happening in Indian cricket. 25 -year -old Shubman Gill has been made the captain of the ODI team. He has replaced Rohit Sharma. This decision was taken on October 4, which made it clear that Team India has now increased towards handing over the command to the next generation.
Gill has been given the captaincy of Test team along with ODI. In T20 format, he is the deputy of Suryakumar Yadav. It is clear that the board is considering him as a full -time captain of the future.
Even though Gill has got the responsibility of captaincy in the coaching of Gautam Gambhir, his leadership Kaushal was first recognized by Rahul Dravid.
Former India fast bowler RP Singh told in a conversation that during 2020-21, Rahul Dravid started feeling that Shubman Gill would one day become the captain of India. He said that during a conversation, when the possible names of captaincy were being discussed, Dravid took the name of Gill without hesitation.
RP Singh told that when he asked Dravid that Gill did not play in all three formats, Dravid said that “Quit all this, he has tremendous ability.” He even said that one day he will not be going to stop and will captain India for a long time.
Shubman Gill’s talent came in front of the world for the first time in the Under-19 World Cup of 2018. The captain of that team was Prithvi Shaw and the coach himself was Rahul Dravid. Gill played an important role in India’s victory by scoring 372 runs in 5 innings in the tournament.
Gill made his ODI debut for India in 2019. Then the test debut took place during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. After this, in 2023, he got a chance in the T20 team. He first established himself in Test cricket, then confirmed his place in ODI and finally T20.
When Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired from Test cricket during IPL 2025 in Gautam Gambhir’s coaching, Gill was given the command of the Test team. Gill captained India in the 5-Test series against England and gave the team a 2-2 equal. During this, Gill also did wonders with the bat and scored more than 700 runs.
