The International Cricket Council (ICC) has fined South Africa for a slow over rate in the third ODI versus England. On Sunday, South Africa slumped to a heavy defeat, beaten by 342 runs. Following the match, the ICC imposed a five percent fine on the South African team after they were found guilty of breaching over-rate regulations.

South Africa entered the third ODI having already secured the series with two dominant wins. However, England finally found their form in the dead-rubber game, ending the series on a high. With centuries from Jacob Bethell and Joe Root, England posted an impressive total, marking their seventh score of over 400 runs in ODIs. Jofra Archer’s brilliant bowling performance then helped dismiss South Africa for just 72 runs.

Following the crushing defeat, South Africa faced an additional penalty for their slow over rate.

The team fell short by one over in the allotted time, prompting the ICC to apply sanctions under Article 2.2 of their Code of Conduct. Importantly, no formal hearing was required, as South Africa’s captain, Temba Bavuma, accepted the fine without contest.

Under the captaincy of Temba Bavuma, South Africa has been showing increasing stability and form in One Day Internationals. Their recent victories include a series win over Australia, followed by a hard-fought triumph against England in their own backyard. The Proteas are quickly becoming a team to watch in the lead-up to the 2027 World Cup.
