Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan supported Shubman Gill before the Asia Cup 2025. He said that it is too early to compare Gill with Virat Kohli. Pathan praised Gill’s T20 performance and said that he is fully prepared for the aggressive game.
Delhi: Former India all -rounder Irfan Pathan has given his opinion on the ongoing discussion about the role of Shubman Gill. Prior to the Asia Cup 2025, Gill has been made the vice -captain of the team and he has recently performed brilliantly in the Test series. Since then, the question is arising between fans and experts whether Gill will be able to perform well in all three formats or not.
When Irfan Pathan was asked whether Shubman Gill can also go through a bad phase like Virat Kohli in future, he clearly said that it is too early to make such comparison. He said, “Virat Kohli is a great player. He has won many matches for India. He had an average around 15 at one time, but that does not mean that he is not a good player. If tomorrow, Shubman Gill also has average of 15 years and still he remains in the team, then we will talk about it.”
Pathan further said, “He has been the vice -captain before, then no one raised the question. Now that he has come back, it is his place.”
Shubman Gill played the last time before the T20 International 2024 T20 World Cup. After this, he did not get much chance in this format.
He said, “Shubman Gill has improved a lot in T20 cricket. The way he has batted in this season, the number of runs scored is fantastic. When he used to play for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), his strike rate was around 125. But now, he has gone above 150. The IPL was more than 150 in the last year’s IPL. I do not think that Shubman Gill will have any problem in this role. “
Team India will start their campaign in the Asia Cup from 9 September. Gill’s role is considered very important this time, and everyone’s eyes will be on his performance.
