He is set to resume training on 31 August, as preparations begin for India’s upcoming home Test season against the West Indies and South Africa.

India fast bowler Akash Deep has stayed away from taking sides in the discussion over workload management. The Bengal pacer, honoured by the Cricket Association of Bengal for his standout performance in the Test series against England, said that decisions on selecting or resting fast bowlers are entirely up to the team management.

The right-arm quick missed the Duleep Trophy after picking up an injury in the final Test at The Oval. However, he is set to resume training on 31 August, as preparations begin for India’s upcoming home Test season against the West Indies and South Africa.

“I’ll begin bowling from tomorrow,” Akash Deep said in an interview with PTI on Saturday.

“I’m feeling well. I’ve been playing continuously for six months, so my body needed some rest,” he added.

During the England tour, Akash Deep emerged as a reliable workhorse. In just three Tests, he delivered 109.1 overs a workload only surpassed by Jasprit Bumrah (119.4) and Mohammed Siraj (185.3).

Pacer leaves workload calls to team management

When asked about the issue of managing fast bowlers’ workload, especially in light of Bumrah being rested for two of the five Tests on the advice of strength and conditioning staff, Akash Deep diplomatically chose not to comment. He emphasised that such matters fall under the control of the support staff and selectors.

“It’s not something I control. The team management and physios handle these decisions. They follow a set process, so it’s up to them. Cricket is a team sport. We all play our part and don’t worry about who is selected. Everyone who takes the field is focused on winning,” he said.

As India gear up for a packed home calendar following the Asia Cup 2025, Akash Deep will be eager to cement his place in the red-ball squad. Not currently part of India’s plans in white-ball cricket, the Bengal seamer will be aiming to make a strong impression in the longest format.

Beyond his bowling, Akash Deep also showcased his potential with the bat during the England series. His gritty knock of 66 from 94 deliveries in the second innings of the final Test underlined his all-round abilities.
