Kiplin Doriga has been charged with robbery following an incident in the early hours on August 25 in St Heliers.
He was part of the PNG squad contesting in the second round of the CWC Challenge League. Doriga, who appeared before the Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday morning, reportedly pleaded guilty to the charges.
Magistrate Rebecca Morley-Kirk ruled that the case was too serious for the Magistrate’s Court and referred it to the Royal Court.
The court declined Doriga’s bail application and he has been remanded in custody on the island until his next appearance. The PNG cricketer will be reappearing before the Royal Court on November 28.
However, there has been no further details of how Kiplin Doriga was caught or why he was accused of the theft. The developments are under proceedings. Meanwhile, Kiplin Doriga has shown mixed form in recent outings.
In the ongoing CWC Challenge League, he scored 12 runs with one catch against Kuwait on August 24 at St Martin, and earlier struck a vital 68 runs with a catch against Denmark on August 22 at St Saviour.
However, he was dismissed for a duck in the T20I against Guernsey on August 14 in Castel, though he contributed with a catch. In October 2024, he scored 28 runs against Kenya in Nairobi and took two catches in the previous match against Kuwait.
Kiplin has made a total of 97 appearances for Papua new Guinea, which including at the 2021 and 2024 T20 World Cups.
He has scored 730 runs in 39 ODI matches and 349 runs in 43 T20Is. Kiplin Doriga’s future in the sport looks uncertain for the time being.
Speaking to the PNG performances in the ongoing CWC Challenge League, the side went on to lose a clash against Jersey on August 28. Jersey came into bat first in the game and managed to post a total of 261 runs in the first innings of the game and secured a mammoth 160 runs against Jersey.
