Former players and fans have questioned Shreyas Iyer’s exclusion from Team India’s squad for the 2025 Asia Cup. They have come out to support the Indian star, blaming the BCCI and the chief selector, Ajit Agarkar.
According to a report in the Times of India, Iyer was confident of his selection for the Continental Cup. He scored 604 runs in IPL 2025 at a strike rate of 175.1.
“Shreyas Iyer will have to wait for his chance as we can’t pick more than 15 players. There is no fault of his,” Agarkar said.
The right-handed batter was not even named in the reserves. A BCCI source has explained the reason.
“A player like Shreyas can’t be named in the reserves. If you pick select him, he plays in the Playing XI. There are no grudges against him. He will be given chances for India across formats. He didn’t fit in this time,” the source said.
Iyer will have to play the five-match T20I series against Australia in October. The Men in Blue will play 15 T20Is after the Asia Cup. Iyer will also compete in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, starting November 26.
