The International Cricket Council (ICC) has cleared the air on the India duo (Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli) name disappearing in the ODI Batter rankings, admitting that it was a technical glitch which has now been rectified.

The stalwarts are expected to return for the three-ODI series against Australia soil in October. Rohit Sharma is ranked second, while Virat Kohli is in fourth position with 756 and 736 rating points respectively.

The updated rankings, which saw Babar Azam at No.2 are confirmed to have suffered a glitch in the system. As per the current date – 20 August 2025, the duo are still active in the ODI format.

Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli last played in the ODI format in February 2025, where they played the Champions Trophy in the UAE.

Rohit Sharma played an impressive innings in the finals of the tournament, guiding India to their third Champions Trophy title.

On the other hand, Virat Kohli was impressive during the group stages of the tournament anchoring the Indian team in tricky conditions in Dubai.

With India set to play their ODI format in the month of October against Australia, both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma started their preparations for the tour.

It will be the last time the duo will travel to Australia and hence the CA has already decided to give a grand farewell to Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

“And if you think about the quality of the players coming, particularly from India, this might be the last time we get to see Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma play in our country. If that’s the case — who knows, it might not be — but if it is, we want to make sure we give them a great send-off and acknowledge the incredible contribution they’ve made to international cricket.”

With the uncertainty over the duo’s future looms, India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has answered Rohit and Virat Kohli’s ODI future and whether they are in scheme of things for the ICC ODI World Cup 2027.

“We still have a T20 World Cup before that, and that is again a huge tournament, which is going to happen in India in February-March. So, the entire focus at the moment—after England—will be on the ICC T20 World Cup. And November-December 2027 is still two-and-a-half years away,” Gambhir said.

“I’ve always said one thing—if you keep performing, age is just a number,” he added. The first match of the ODI series will begin on October 19 at Optus Stadium.
