With the selectors meeting in Mumbai on August 19 to pick India’s Asia Cup squad, it is reported that Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj are unlikely to make it into the squad, with selectors preferring Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson.
Shubman Gill has been the standout performer in the test series against England, scoring over 754 runs in 10 innings, which is the second-highest run-scoring Indian in a test series behind only Sunil Gavaskar.
Meanwhile, Mohammed Siraj also had an impressed outing as he was the highest wicket-taker and the only pacer to play all five matches.
While Gill also had a great IPL 2025 season, the selectors are likely to stick with the pair of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson. Meanwhile, Yashasvi Jaiswal is said to be a strong contender for the backup opener slot.
Gill is reportedly trailing in the opener race, unless Gautam Gambhir makes a strong pitch for the Indian test captain.
“If Gill is included, he will bat at the top straight away. If he doesn’t get a game, then there is no point in having him. At the same time, it would be unfair on Sanju, who has performed well.
If Gill comes in, Sanju might miss out, and Jitesh Sharma could get a game,” said a BCCI source.Meanwhile other batters like Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, and Suryakumar Yadav. Another batting slot is yet to be decided with Shivam Dube and Washington Sundar as contenders. On the other hand, Jitesh Sharma is expected to be second wicketkeeper
However, Shreyas Iyer had a great season this year and led Punjab Kings to the final of the IPL, may not find a slot in the squad.
Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah is likely to lead the attack, with Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana will fill up other slots in the side.
Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi and Axar Patel Could Be Designated Spinners.
The Asia Cup 2025 is set to begin on September 09 with Afghanistan and UAE play in the opener match. India’s next Asia Cup 2025 campaign begins with the game against UAE on September 10 at Dubai International Stadium.
