Robin Uthappa, who played for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Indian Premier League (IPL) at one time, recently made a sensational disclosure that he wanted to leave KKR after winning IPL 2014. Uthappa, who was purchased for Rs 5 crore in the 2014 IPL auction, admitted that he had taken this decision with a desire to increase his earnings.

Uthappa was expected to earn more money after his brilliant season with the bat and he also talked to KKR’s management to release him but KKR’s management refused to release him, after which he had to play for KKR for 5 crores.

Uthappa said on YouTube’s ‘Kimappa’ show on YouTube, “After Pune Warriors India, I went to KKR for Rs 5 crore. After my excellent performance, we won IPL 2014 and I got Orange Cap. After this I wanted to be released. I wanted to go back to the auction. I want to take full advantage of more earnings. By the age of 29 years, I wanted to increase my earnings as much as possible.

Uthappa further said, “I went to KKR’s leadership group and talked to them. He refused and said that we can’t let you go. We want you to play for us. We want you to play for us for a long time. Then I talked to him and found that at that time I could not earn more than 5 crores on the contract basis. So I just wanted to go. I just wanted to go and talk.”

Explain that after the BCCI, after the BCCI sacked the Pune Warriors India (PWI) and keeping its players in the auction, Uthappa joined KKR. Together with captain Gautam Gambhir, Uthappa had greatly strengthened KKR’s top order. He scored 660 runs at an average of 44 that year and won the Orange Cap. KKR won the IPL 2014 title by defeating Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab) at the Eden Gardens.
