Former Zimbabwe all-rounder Guy Whittall recently survived a leopard attack, thanks to the help of his dog, but needed emergency surgery after being mauled by the big cat, according to a Daily Mail report.

The 51-year-old was attacked while hiking through the conservancy he operates in Zimbabwe’s Humani region. His dog, Chikara, saved him but sustained injuries in the process.

After suffering severe injuries in the incident accident, the former cricketer was airlifted to a hospital in Harare for surgery. His wife, Hannah Stooks-Whittall, posted images on social media showing Whittall with bandages wrapped around his head as doctors treated him.

“He is extremely fortunate. First, he survived a crocodile attack. Now, he escaped a leopard attack, thanks to Chikara’s timely intervention. Without Chikara’s help, the outcome could have been tragic.” Stooks-Whittall said to Daily Mail.

Stooks-Whittall stated Chikara was also immediately taken to veterinary hospital.

“We are so grateful to him, and Chikara will get some extra chicken as a treat. He’s got a vet appointment because he has a few scratches, but he should be okay. He’s in better shape than Guy.” she added.

“Fortunately, Guy is awake in bed and talking,” she said, “He’s telling anyone who will listen how he wrestled with a leopard, but we all know it was actually Chikara who saved him.”
