A report by Dainik Jagran suggests that Rohit and Virat are not part of India’s strategy for the 2027 World Cup, as younger players are set to take their places. The duo is said to no longer fit into the team management’s plans for the prestigious tournament.
The report also states that Rohit may have the opportunity to lead India in his final series against Australia, where he and Virat could announce their retirements.
It’s further claimed that the upcoming series in Australia could be their last, with both players potentially making an official announcement before the tour. If they wish to extend their ODI careers beyond this, they would need to feature in the Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT), India’s domestic 50-over competition.
Rohit is expected to represent Mumbai, while Virat would play for Delhi if they opt to participate. The 2025-26 edition is scheduled to begin on December 25, with the final group-stage match taking place on January 8. However, this clashes with India’s ODI series against New Zealand, which will be played from January 11 to January 18.
The Australia tour, which could mark the end of their careers, is set to feature three ODIs in Perth, Adelaide, and Sydney on 19, 23, and 25 October, respectively.
