Indian Bowling coach Morne Morkel has provided a major injury update on Jasprit Bumrah, saying that he wasn’t injured after he was seen favouring his left ankle during the second session on Day 03 of the Manchester Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
Morne Morkel admitted that the Indian pacers were lacking a bit of energy that was needed on the flat pitch at Manchester.
Morkel neglected injury concerns for Jasprit Bumrah and said that a bit more energy is needed from the pacers as their speeds dropped on day 03 of the Manchester Test.
The fans were left sweating as Bumrah went off the field in the second session and returned only close to tea.
Despite coming on to bowl, Bumrah has been balancing in the left ankle a lot and lacked rhythm with the ball in the third session. He did take a wicket in the end of Jamie Smith and ended day 03 with figures of one for 95 runs in 28 overs.
Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj seemed to be struggling with a niggle but was able to shake it off and continue bowling.
Speaking at the post match conference after day 03, Morkel said that Bumrah rolled his ankles doing down the stairs and siraj also did the same on one of the footholes.
“Yeah, unfortunately, when we took the second new ball, Bumrah rolled his ankles going down the stairs, and then Siraj also I think rolled his foot in one of the footholes. But they, they seem to be OK.”
“That’s something that we’re definitely also trying to get our heads around. On a surface where it gets a little bit flatter, you need a little bit of energy behind the ball, and I think, you know, that’s definitely one of the factors for us so far in our bowling innings is just getting that little bit of extra zip off the wicket to create the opportunities for caught behind and LBW,” he added.
“But yeah, to look at the workloads of the guys like Siraj and those sort of guys. They’ve had heavy workloads. For Anshul, it’s his first Test match so far and it’s important for us that we want to grow and develop a nice fast bowling unit,” Morkel added.
“So not to judge on that. I think it is also a heavier sort of outfield. But in terms of commitment and effort that the guys have put in, I don’t think we can fault that. But it’s just that, you know, that’s a good point you made. You needed a little bit of energy on the ball on, on good surfaces where the ball at times is not doing as much,” concluded Morkel.
England ended a day 03 scoring 544 runs for 7 wickets, securing a 186-run lead over India in the Manchester Test.
