Over the past few months, 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi from Bihar has emerged as one of Indian cricket’s most exciting young prospects. His performances, especially in white-ball cricket, have caught widespread attention.

Representing Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2025, the teenage sensation etched his name in the record books by becoming the fastest Indian to score a century in the league’s history.

Following his IPL success, Vaibhav was selected for India’s Under-19 squad for their tour of England, where he continued his red-hot form in the Youth ODI series.

However, his transition to the red-ball format hasn't been as smooth, highlighting an area that still needs development in his young career.

During the England tour, India’s U-19 team played five Youth One Day Internationals. Vaibhav made an immediate impact.

In the opening match, he smashed 48 runs off just 19 deliveries, hitting five sixes. He followed that up with a quickfire 45 in the second game. While he narrowly missed back-to-back fifties, he finally converted his start into a big score in the third ODI, registering 86 runs.

The fourth ODI saw Vaibhav at his explosive best.

He hammered a sensational 143 off just 78 balls, becoming the fastest batter to hit a century in Youth ODI cricket.

His ability to dominate bowlers and maintain a high strike rate marked him as a standout performer. Though Vaibhav scored 33 in the final ODI, his overall numbers were remarkable—355 runs in five matches at an average of 71 and an astonishing strike rate of 174.

Struggles in the Longer Format

Despite his white-ball brilliance, Vaibhav couldn't replicate the same magic in the red-ball format.

In the first Youth Test, he was dismissed for 14 in the opening innings but showed promise with a 56-run knock in the second.

However, he managed just 20 runs in the first innings of the second Test and was dismissed for a duck in the final innings.

In four innings across two Tests, Vaibhav scored only 90 runs at a modest average of 22.50.

While his white-ball credentials are already turning heads, the young talent will be hoping to find similar consistency in the red-ball arena as he matures.
