Test cricket has a new batting king. England’s Harry Brook has replaced teammate Joe Root as the world’s No.1 Test batter, following a brilliant 158-run knock in the Edgbaston Test against India.
Harry Brook now leads the ICC rankings with 886 points, pushing Root to second with 868 points — an 18-point gap between the two Englishmen.
Brook’s rise has been fueled by consistent performances in the ongoing IND vs ENG Test series. He had earlier played a solid innings of 99 runs in the first Test at Headingley.
His Edgbaston knock not only earned him individual accolades but also saw him leapfrog Root, who failed to make an impact with scores of 22 and 6 in the second match.
New Zealand’s experienced batter Kane Williamson continues to hold the third spot in the ICC Test rankings with a rating of 867.
India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal, despite a change in his rating, remains steady at fourth position with 858 points. Australian stalwart Steve Smith also retains his fifth spot, carrying a rating of 813.
Indian skipper Shubman Gill’s stellar form in the ongoing Test series against England has significantly boosted his ICC Test ranking.
His consistent performances in both matches have propelled him up by 15 places, placing him at number 6 with a rating of 807. His impressive twin centuries at Edgbaston played a key role in this rise.
On the other hand, South African captain Temba Bavuma maintains his position at number 7 with a rating of 790.
Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, however, has slipped one place and is now jointly ranked seventh with Bavuma, both sharing the same rating. Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis holds the ninth spot with 781 points.
Meanwhile, England’s young wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith has made a remarkable entry into the top 10. Thanks to his impressive showing, Smith jumped 16 spots and now occupies the 10th position with a rating of 753.
India defeated England by 336 runs in the second Test, leveling the five-match series 1-1. Chasing a massive target of 608, England folded for 276. This win marked India’s biggest away victory in terms of runs.
Indian captain Shubman Gill starred with the bat, scoring 269 and 161 in both innings.
Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja also played crucial roles in building India’s imposing total.
With the momentum now on India’s side, the third Test at Lord’s promises to be a thrilling contest. With the momentum now on India’s side, the third Test at Lord’s promises to be a thrilling contest.
