The 28-year-old Akash Deep played a pivotal role in India’s victory in the second test of the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy.
His 10-wicket haul and Shubman Gill’s stunning knocks have helped the side to register its first win of the WTC 2025-27 cycle.
Akash Deep picked four wickets in the first innings and went on to pick a six-wicket haul in the second innings to complete the game with a figure of 10/187 surpassing Chetan Sharma’s 10/188 record by an Indian in a Test in England.
He also made Akash Deep only the second Indian pacer to achieve a 10-wicket match haul in the country.
India has previously played eight tests in Edgbaston where they lost seven and drawed one. This dominant victory also became India’s biggest test win away from home in terms of runs, overtaking their 318 run win against West Indies in 2019.
Despite Akash Deep’s impressive bowling performance, Shubman Gill also made a notable contribution smashing back to back centuries and also made his maiden double century in Tests.
Following the memorable win, Akash Deep dedicated his performance to his elder sister and revealed that she has been battling cancer for the last two months.
“I have not told this to anyone. My elder sister has been suffering from cancer for the last two months. She is now stable and she is fin. I think she will be the happiest (seeing my performance). I want to dedicate this match to her. I wanted to see a smile on her face,” he said after the game.
“This is for you. Whenever I held the ball in my hand, your face was in my mind. I want to see happiness in your face. We are all with you,” his message to sister.
Levelling the series 1-1, India will face England in the third test starting on July 10 at The Lord’s, London.
