England defeated India by 5 wickets in the first Test to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. Chasing 371 runs, the hosts were hardly troubled by the Indian bowlers, with Ben Duckett scoring 149 runs. He added 188 runs with Zak Crawley, who scored 65 runs. Joe Root scored a fifty and added important runs with Ben Stokes (33) and Jamie Smith (44*) to take England home in Leeds. For India, Prasidh Krishna and Shardul Thakur took two wickets each.
