Former Indian left-arm spinner Dilip Doshi, who was 77, breathed his last in London on Monday, June 23. He is survived by his wife Kalindi, son Nayan, and daughter Visakha.

Doshi made his Test debut at the age of 32 in 1979. He represented India in 33 Tests and 15 ODIs, taking 114 wickets and 22 scalps, respectively.

He played for Bengal and Saurashtra in domestic cricket and was renowned for his match-winning abilities. Doshi was active in domestic set-up for nearly two decades and competed in 238 first-class matches. He claimed 898 wickets, including 43 five-wicket hauls and six 10-wicket hauls.

He was respected by rivals. West Indies legend Sir Garfield Sobers once hailed him. “Dilip Doshi knows about his craft. He can pass on the knowledge to those who are willing to follow his career path. He is the most qualified bowler to talk about spin.”

Former BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah paid heartfelt condolences: “It is a personal loss for me. He was one of the legends and the finest human being I have ever met. His dedication made him special.”

Jaydev Shah, President of the Saurashtra Cricket Association, and son of Niranjan Shah, also remembered the spinner: “His demise is a big loss. His legacy will continue to live in our hearts. He was my uncle, mentor, and someone I looked up to.”
