Indian cricket's newest wonder boy, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, has taken the sport by storm after becoming the youngest player to debut and score a century in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Playing for the Rajasthan Royals in the recent IPL 2025 season, Vaibhav Suryavanshi impressed everyone with fearless and aggressive batting at the top of the order.

The 14-year-old batter's IPL journey could kick off because of an injury to the Rajasthan Royals captain, Sanju Samson, and he immediately made headlines by hitting a six on his very first ball in the IPL. A few matches later, Vaibhav smashed 101 runs off just 38 balls against Gujarat Titans, which was the fastest century by an Indian and the second-fastest overall in IPL history.

India debut buzz grows for Vaibhav Suryavanshi, but BCCI says 'Not Yet'

Suryavanshi, who was born in Bihar in 2011, has been training since the age of four under his father's guidance. By the time he was 12, he was already part of Bihar's U-19 team in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy.

His talent also turned heads in the U-19 Asia Cup and India's preparatory matches, where he hit a stunning 190 in just 90 balls against Australian counterparts.

Despite all the buzz, former India spinner and BCCI selector Venkatapathy Raju has called for patience.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi will take a lot of time: Venkatapathy Raju

He admitted that Suryavanshi, who is currently in England with the India U19 team, has the talent, but he believes that the young batter should first shine in the U-19 World Cup and prove himself in domestic four-day matches before being considered for the senior Indian team.

Venkatapathy Raju was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times, "Yes, yes, he will take a lot of time.

He has to be one of those guys who needs to do well in U-19 World Cups. He has to perform quite a bit in domestic cricket. Four-day games. And we can give time. See, talent-wise, we've already seen him, what he can do with a white ball, right?"

Vaibhav Suryavanshi sparks comparison with Sachin Tendulkar

Vaibhav Suryavanshi's rise has reminded many of a young Sachin Tendulkar, who made his India debut at just 16. Like Sachin, Suryavanshi is showing early signs of greatness. But the former Indian selector Raju believes that the young batter needs more time and consistency across the formats before making it to the Indian cricket team, just like Tendulkar did early in his career.

Raju signed off by saying, "It depends on the consistency, right? We're firm believers. We might talk about somebody like Sachin, right? First, in his Ranji Trophy debut, he got 100. Duleep Trophy, he got 100. Rest of India, he got 100, right? All three-day games.

All four-day games. All five-day games. So, like that, I think when you know the talent, we should give him enough time to go and play and do well, and you feel that he's really good enough and he can perform, why not? We can still bring him in."
