Young Indian batter Sai Sudharsan, who has received his first call-up to India’s red-ball squad for the upcoming five-match Test series against England, has revealed that Chennai cricketer Washington Sundar has been a key inspiration for him since his childhood.

Sudharsan, a steady left-handed batsman, could potentially make his debut in the series starting Friday, 20 June. In an emotional conversation shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Sudharsan expressed his deep admiration for Sundar. Despite being only slightly younger, Sudharsan has always viewed the versatile all-rounder as a role model.

“He has been a source of inspiration for me since I was a child. I’ve had the chance to play against him a few times, which always feels special. Honestly, we’ve always admired him. I’ve practiced a couple of times against him, and the way he rose to the occasion and performed for the country, it was incredibly fast-paced. That stuck with me. His success in the IPL and for the national team was a huge motivator for me, especially coming from Chennai. Knowing him from a young age and playing alongside him, it’s truly inspiring. It made me want to follow his path,” Sudharsan said.

Washington Sundar, who is hoping to secure a spot in the playing XI amid competition from Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav, expressed pride in Sudharsan’s progress. He also acknowledged the positive impact the young batter is already making in their hometown.

“I’ve seen him play on TV, and there’s so much to learn from him — his skill set and the work ethic he brings. He has been an inspiration to many kids in Chennai, and I hope he continues to inspire young people all around the world,” Sundar commented.
