Delhi: Indian cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir is going to join the team in Leeds before the Test series against England on 17 June. He will leave on Tuesday and will join the Indian party on the same day.
Gambhir returned to India a few days ago as his mother had a heart attack on 11 June. Now his health has improved. A BCCI source said that Gambhir’s mother is now fine and he will leave for England on Tuesday.
Gambhir had monitored training with the team at the beginning of the tour but could not attend the intra-squad match between India vs India A. In his absence, assistant coach Ryan Ten Doishet, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak and bowling coach Morne Morkel took over the practice session.
The practice match between 14 and 17 June was finished a day earlier. The team management, satisfied with the performance of the players, gave them an additional rest of one day.
Prior to the main exercise match, Test experts like Karun Nair, Dhruv Jurlel and KL Rahul participated in four -day matches against England Lions. Karun Nair scored a double century in the first match, while KL Rahul batted brilliantly in the second match.
Gautam Gambhir will now have some important decisions about the playing XI. It is believed that Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul will open, while Shubman Gill will bat at number four. Karun Nair is the strongest contender for the third number, but Sai Sudarshan and Abhimanyu Ishwaran are also in this race.
There will be a match between Shardul Thakur and Nitish Kumar Reddy for the all -rounder’s slot. At the same time, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar are present in the spin department, which can be included in the team combination according to the circumstances.
