Aakash Chopra, the former India cricketer, has stated that Virat Kohli is unlikely to surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 100 international centuries. Although Chopra was taken aback by Kohli’s decision to retire from Test cricket, he remains doubtful that the modern great will be able to break the record if he concentrates solely on One Day Internationals.

India are about to take on England in a five-match Test series, with the first match set to begin on Friday, June 20, in Leeds. With both Kohli and Rohit Sharma having retired from Test cricket, the Indian squad for this series, which consists of 18 players, features a relatively inexperienced batting line-up.

In a recent YouTube video, Aakash Chopra was questioned about whether Kohli could possibly surpass Tendulkar’s record of 100 international centuries across formats.

“It’s a tough when you’ve stepped away from two formats. I’m a bit surprised by his early retirement, especially considering he’s just 36 and in great physical shape. It’s not as if his bat isn’t performing well,” he said (5:30).

“If he’s decided not to play in two formats, and given that ODIs aren’t played as frequently, I don’t think Virat Kohli will be able to achieve it. Unless he reverses his decision on Test cricket. It wouldn’t be a bad thing if he decides to come back. But at the moment, if things stay as they are, I don’t see him reaching Sachin Tendulkar’s record,” he observed

Kohli has struggled in Test cricket lately, scoring just three centuries since 2020, including an unbeaten 100 in India’s second innings during the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 in Perth last year.
