Kevin Pietersen has made a big claim, stating that Aiden Markram‘s century in the World Test Championship final against Australia was the finest innings ever played by a South African batter in Test cricket. Markram’s composed 136 runs from 207 balls steered the Proteas to a 5-wicket victory, ending their long wait for an ICC title.

Markram’s innings included 14 boundaries, and he built an important partnership with captain Temba Bavuma to guide South Africa to the win. He was named the Player of the Match for his remarkable performance. Pietersen admitted that although it might not have been the most aggressive or entertaining knock, it was extraordinary when considering the immense expectations, the stage, and the pressure Markram faced.

“It’s likely the finest innings ever played by a South African batter in Test cricket. While it may not be remembered as the most aggressive or exciting in South Africa’s Test history, the context makes it remarkable.

“Considering the expectations, the stage, and the pressure after failing in the first innings, it was truly extraordinary. Whether you’re a batter or a bowler, the pressure when your country is relying on you to perform is immense,” Pietersen remarked.

Pietersen also pointed out that Markram was under considerable pressure, particularly after the early dismissal of Ryan Rickleton.

“Even though he lost (Ryan) Rickelton early, he still managed to deliver something truly remarkable. The level of pressure he was under is hard to put into words,” he added.
