India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has flown back home from the UK due to a family emergency. According to a report by RevSportz, Gambhir’s mother reportedly suffered a heart attack and is currently admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU).
The former India opener had travelled to England with the Indian team last week but returned home ahead of the India vs India A practice match and the start of the Test series against England. The first Test between India and England starts from June 20 onwards in Headingley.
His return to the Indian squad remains uncertain at this point. There is no official word yet on when Gambhir will rejoin the team.

With the upcoming India vs England Test series, Team India steps into a new chapter under the leadership of Shubman Gill, following Rohit Sharma’s retirement from the longest format. This series marks head coach Gautam Gambhir’s fourth Test assignment since taking over the reins from Rahul Dravid.
Gambhir was officially appointed head coach after India’s historic T20 World Cup triumph, which served as his first major success with the team. He kicked off his tenure on a promising note, overseeing a dominant T20I series whitewash against Bangladesh at home.
However, the honeymoon period was short-lived. India endured back-to-back Test series defeats—a 3-0 drubbing at home by New Zealand and a 3-1 loss to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. These results triggered criticism from fans and pundits alike, with some questioning Gambhir’s ability in red-ball cricket and labelling him a white-ball specialist.
But the narrative took a turn with India’s remarkable comeback, culminating in a title-winning campaign at the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy—reaffirming Gambhir’s credentials as a capable and resilient coach across formats.
