Shreyas Iyer’s leadership credentials are well acknowledged, but fortune hasn’t favored him in recent finals.
Just days after the Punjab Kings, led by him, ended as runners-up in the IPL 2025 final, Iyer’s SoBo Mumbai Falcons missed out on the Mumbai T20 League title as well.
In a highly anticipated final clash at the Wankhede Stadium, the SoBo Falcons squared off against the Mumbai South Central Maratha Royals.
Despite a steady performance throughout the league, the Falcons couldn’t deliver when it mattered most. After being asked to bat first, Iyer’s side managed 157 runs in their 20 overs.
However, they couldn’t defend the total, as the Maratha Royals chased it down with five wickets in hand to lift the trophy.Iyer, visibly dejected, spoke candidly about the pressure of playing back-to-back finals (IPL & Mumbai T20 League) and the emotional toll of consecutive defeats. While he praised his teammates for their spirited campaign, he also emphasized the importance of learning from setbacks.
"Don't want to pinpoint any particular incident. Overall, the boys were brilliant with their efforts.
We lost just one game en route to the final. Just a one-off game where you can't single out anyone - it's basically backstabbing, and I don't enjoy that. We've learnt a lot."It's pretty common to feel dejected after a final loss. It must hurt them. But when they come back next year, they'll have that extra motivation and confidence. They should be proud of their effort," he added.
Despite the heartbreak, Iyer chose to focus on the positives. With several young and inexperienced players in his side, he highlighted the value of playing in front of a packed stadium and the growth it can spark.
His encouraging words were aimed at building confidence in the squad, with hopes of a stronger return in the next edition. His encouraging words were aimed at building confidence in the squad, with hopes of a stronger return in the next edition.
