Delhi: West Indies coach Darren Sammy has reacted to Nicholas Puran’s retirement from international cricket. After the defeat in the third T20 match against England (due to which the West Indies had to face a clean sweep of 0-3), Sammy, while talking to reporters, commented on the retirement of Puran, Henrik Klassen and other players.
Sammy said that he already feared any such situation. He said, “I had realized from inside that something could happen. If a talent like Puran was in the team, it would have been nice, but I could not control anyone’s career.” He also said that he is satisfied that Puran pronounced this decision soon, so that the team could get time to plan for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026 preparations.
Sammy said, “I greeted him, and they have the team. Now it’s time to move forward and Nicholas Puran is the time to plan. The T20 World Cup is coming, so I respect it that he has already told us.”
Darren Sammy believes that more players can go on this path in the near future. The former all -rounder said, “I am sure more players will do the same. T20 cricket is now going in this direction, especially for countries like West Indies, where it is a difficult task to motivate the players to play for ‘Crest’ (team’s glory).”
He also gave examples of players like Heinrich Klassen, Quinton de Kock and Glenn Maxwell, who have given priority to franchise cricket by retiring from international cricket. He said, “Klassen, D Cock – These players have also taken the same path. It is out of our control.”
“I am not surprised at all” – Sammy
On Puran’s decision, Sammy clearly said that he was not surprised at all. He told what he had said to the players in the team meeting before the third T20 match. The 41-year-old former captain of the West Indies said, “Surprised? No, I am not surprised at all. I told the players in the team meeting that it is completely dependent on every player to understand the meaning of Crest (Symbol of West Indies) and play cricket that enthusiasts the audience.
Now West Indies will play three T20 matches series against Ireland, which will conclude their tour of England.
