Sourav Ganguly was disappointed over Shreyas Iyer’s omission from the test squad for the upcoming India tour of England 2025, which begins on June 20.
Iyer has been in brilliant form in the past year, and he emerged as the top scorer for Punjab Kings in the IPL 2025. He played all 17 games of the IPL season and amassed 604 runs. With the retirement of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Shreyas Iyer was considered the top contender for the middle order but did not find a spot in the squad.
The Indian men’s cricket team will face England in a five-match Test series, which is set to start on June 20. Ajit Agarkar-led selection team picked an 18-member squad led by Shubman Gill for the first away series on the 2025-27 WTC cycle last month.
With the India squad having started their preparations for the high-octane clash, Sourav Ganguly has broken his silence on Iyer’s snub in the India squad for the England tests. “He has been playing at his best in the last year, and should have been in this team. Last one year has been fantastic for him.”
“He isn’t the player who got left out. He is now scoring under pressure, taking responsibility, playing the short ball well. Although Test cricket’s different, I would have had him in this series to see what he can do,” said Sourav Ganguly.
Shreyas Iyer scored a century for India on his Test debut against New Zealand in Kanpur, played his last test appearance for India in Visakhapatnam last year. He was dropped from the side due to his form.
After losing his spot in the test team, Iyer impressed with his batting performance in white-ball cricket. He was India’s best batter in the Champions Trophy 2025, where Rohit Sharma-led side earlier this year with a 100% win record.
While asked about India’s chances in the series, he said, “Yes, sure. We just need two things: batting well and (Jasprit) Bumrah remaining fit. We won in Australia, in Melbourne (2020-21), with a young batting lineup, having no (Virat) Kohli, no Rohit Sharma. So, I do not see why we cannot win.”
The first match of the test series will be played between June 20 and 24 at Headingley.
