Glenn Maxwell Appointed as Washington Freedom Captain for MLC 2025

The Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has been appointed as the Washington Freedom captain for the upcoming season of MLC 2025.

The Aussie will lead the franchise for the entire duration of the month-long tournament. He will be taking over from Steve Smith, who led the side to the title last year. The announcement comes days after Maxwell’s ODI retirement.

However, Smith will be captaining the side for two games in the season. Smith will be unavailable for most of the matches due to national commitments. After the conclusion of WTC 2025 Finals, Australia will be playing a three match test series against West Indies and will be likely to join Washington Freedom between the WTC finals and Caribbean tour.

Glenn Maxwell was part of the franchise in previous edition. He scored 153 runs at an average of 38.25, including a half century. He also picked 10 wickets at an average of 17 from eight games. He also have a economy rate of 6.66 runs per over stood out.

Maxwell has captained Melbourne Stars on 65 games, where the club has won 34 games, lost 30 whereas one ended in no result. He also captained Punjab Kings in the 2017 edition of the IPL where the franchise won 7 out of 14 games and narrowly missed out on playoffs spot.

On the other hand, Corey Anderson and Heinrich Klaasen will continue to lead their teams, while Los Angeles Knight Riders and Texas Super Kings have not made any announcements.

Meanwhile, Nicholas Pooran has been appointed as captain of MI New York for the upcoming season.

Nicholas pooranwho was the leading run-scorer in the 2023 MLC season, scoring 388 runs, will be leading the team in the upcoming edition of the tournament.

The left-handed batter has established himself as one of the most formidable players in the short format. His appointment comes at a time when his abilities as a batter are at their peak, making him a strategic choice for the leadership role.
