The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has anticipated that Rohit Sharma would retire from ODIs after the Champions Trophy, as they have the same long-term vision with ODI captaincy as they did with Test leadership.
Rohit Sharma’s future in ODIs is uncertain as the skipper hangs up his boots in both test and T20I cricket, at least as captain of the India National Cricket Team.
Currently, Gill was named as the test team captain, while Suryakumar Yadav led Men in Blues in the T20I format. Despite Rohit Sharma stressing that he will not retire from ODIs any time soon, with many speculating that he is aiming to play in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 in South Africa, but the selectors are not sure about that.
On this occasion, a BCCI official revealed that many board officials and selectors believed Rohi Sharma was planning to step away from ODIs after winning the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, but he decided to continue and later retired from Tests.
“Quite frankly, a lot of us thought Rohit wanted to move away from the ODI format after winning the Champions Trophy. There have been no discussions between Rohit and the selectors since over his ODI future,” said a BCCI official.
Rohit’s age has never been a concern, but his slowing reflexes and frequent fitness issues are forcing us to look beyond him for the captaincy.
He played the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 with a hamstring niggle and was mostly used as an impact player by the Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2025 has raised doubts about his long term fitness and availability.
With the next ICC ODI World Cup scheduled for October 2027, the current ODI captain, Rohit Sharma, will be 40 years old by then.
Give his age, it’s uncertain whether he’ll still be at the top of his game in terms of fitness. So, the selectors are reportedly planning to hand over the ODI captaincy to Shubman Gill.
The move would be made it right away would depend on how workload of the all-format players is spaced out in the lead up to the home T20 World Cup in February 2026.
Currently, 12 ODIs are schedule until next year’s T20 World Cup – the immediate priority. All those in a targetted group of players would be trailled under Suryakumar Yadav‘s leadership.
Rohit has repeatedly made it clear that he has no plans to quit ODIs. “I’m not going to retire from this format, just to make sure that no rumours are spread going forward,” he said after winning the Champions Trophy final in March.
“I have retired from two formats, but I am still playing one format,” Rohit again said in May when he had a stand named after him at the Wankhede stadium. “When India plays whichever team here (in Mumbai), that’ll make it even more special.”
