Aakash Chopra highlighted the opening issues contributed to Delhi Capitals’ downfall in IPL 2025. He pointed out that DC tried to fit KL Rahul in different slots. The Capitals started the 18th season with four consecutive wins, but once they lost to the Mumbai Indians in a close game, their performance dropped, and they failed to make it to the playoffs. DC won just three of their last 10 matches, with the contest against the Sunrisers Hyderabad being called off due to rain after the first innings.

Former India opener Aakash mentioned that Delhi Capitals’ opening conundrum played a key role in their struggles.

“They failed to figure out who they should play as an opener. They were winning when Jake Fraser-McGurk was getting chances, but they could not keep him in the playing group. DC tried seven different opening combinations, but they didn’t work out in their favour,” Aakash Chopra said.

“They thought about KL Rahul in the end, but it was too late. Rahul was not given a designated batting slot earlier, while others were favoured. They left the breadcrumbs for KL Rahul, thinking he would manage,” he added.

Jake Fraser-McGurk scored 55 runs at an average of 9.17 in six innings. KL Rahul amassed 539 runs at an average of 53.90 in 13 innings and was the team’s highest run-scorer of the season.

“Delhi Capitals didn’t care about a replacement for Harry Brook”: Aakash Chopra

Aakash Chopra reckoned that the Delhi Capitals’ reluctance to buy a replacement for Harry Brook contributed to their downfall.

“DC were arrogant about not buying a replacement for Harry Brook, who pulled out of the season at the last moment. Dewald Brevis was available before CSK added him to the squad. It was too late by the time they bought (Sediqullah) Atal,” he said.

Aakash Chopra also pointed out that Delhi didn’t play T Natarajan in all the matches. The management and captain didn’t give him a new ball when he was included in the XI.
