India will miss retired Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the five-match Test series against England. The veterans bid adieu to the longest format last month. Meanwhile, the selection committee chairman, Ajit Agarkar, revealed that Jasprit Bumrah will not play all the games to avoid another back injury. Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir mentioned that management has yet to take a call on which Test matches Jasprit Bumrah will play. Former India bowling coach Bharat Arun explained the real issue with the pacer.
Bumrah missed the white-ball matches against England, the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, and some matches of the 18th season of the Indian Premier League due to a back spasm suffered in Australia.
Speaking to RevSportz, Arun reckoned that even less bowling can lead to injury. He wants the team management to devise a toned-down practice session for the pacer.
“Bowling more or less can injure any bowler. We can’t control the number of overs Jasprit Bumrah bowls in a Test match,” he said.
“You can tone down practice sessions depending on how many overs he bowls in a Test match. He needs to work on his recovery. Bumrah can work out in the gym or with the physio. Bumrah’s presence in the middle is important because he can inspire other bowlers as well,” he added.
“If other bowlers can support Jasprit Bumrah from the other end, it will be good”: Bharat Arun.
Arun also stressed the need for other bowlers to share the workload with Jasprit Bumrah. He was overused in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia as other bowlers failed to leave a mark, resulting in another injury to Bumrah.
“Bumrah adds a lot of value to the team. I expect him to play in all the Test matches in England. If other bowlers support him, he can participate in all the games. It is wrong to say that he is fit for just three games. There is a need for other bowlers to help Bumrah play all contests,” he concluded.
