Team India Test captain Shubman Gill is gearing up for the upcoming five red-ball matches against England. He replaced Rohit Sharma as skipper after the latter announced his retirement from the longest format. Gill will not have the services of Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin, who have also bid adieu to Test cricket.
It will not be easy for the 25-year-old, as England have a magnificent track record at home. The team hasn’t lost a Test series at home since Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum were appointed captain and head coach. The winning percentage is 75.
It’s been a long time since India won a Test series in a European country. Gill will expect a good performance from his players.
“I was overwhelmed by the big responsibility. I look forward to the great challenge, but we haven’t decided on our batting order as we still have some time left. I don’t follow any particular style. The more you play, the better you become,” Shubman Gill said.
“I want to communicate with players and make them feel secure. It is important to talk about their strengths and weaknesses. They will only give their best when you stand with them,” he added.
Gill led the Men in Blue in a five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe last year. He was Rohit Sharma’s deputy in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. In addition to international cricket exposure, Gill has been leading the Gujarat Titans since 2024. In the 18th season of the Indian Premier League, the Titans made the playoffs.
