Delhi: Australian star all -rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from ODI cricket. He has taken this decision to focus on his fitness and future T20 cricket. The 36 -year -old Maxwell will now focus on domestic and international T20 leagues like T20 World Cup and Big Bash League to be fully held in 2026.
Maxwell last played the Champions Trophy for Australia in 2025, where the team was out in the semi -finals. He played a total of 149 matches in his ODI career, scoring 3990 runs. During this time, 4 centuries and 23 half -centuries came out of his bat. He also proved useful with the ball, he took 77 wickets, 4 times he took 4 wickets in an innings.
Maxwell said that he interacted with George Bailey, the selection chairman of Cricket Australia and said that he would not be able to play till the 2027 ODI World Cup. He said, “I started feeling that my body is not supporting the same as before. I told Bailey that now the time has come to give my place to a young player, so that he can establish himself in this role.”
Maxwell further said, “I did not want me to remain in the team for only a few series and snatched the opportunity of a youth. As long as I thought I was playing for the team, I kept playing. But now the team is moving in a clear direction and in such a situation they should get a chance to make the right combination before the World Cup.”
Glenn Maxwell has been an important part of Australia’s 2015 and 2023 World Cup winning teams. In both the tournaments, he made a decisive contribution to the team’s victory with his all -round performance. Especially his historic innings against Afghanistan will always be remembered at the Wankhede Stadium in the 2023 ODI World Cup.
Maxwell scored an unbeaten 201* in that match with 21 fours and 10 sixes off only 128 balls. He became the first player to score a double century while batting at number two in ODI cricket. In this brilliant innings, he achieved the target of 292 runs as soon as he got Australia from the very difficult situation of 91/7 and captain Pat Cummins.
Apart from this, Maxwell also has a record of the fastest century in the World Cup history, which he made in just 40 balls against the Netherlands in Delhi in the 2023 World Cup.
