Pacer Mukesh Kumar stirred up a social media storm on Sunday after donning the No. 18 jersey - a number long associated with Indian cricket legend Virat Kohli - during India 'A's first unofficial Test against England Lions.
The move didn't sit well with fans, many of whom took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice their disapproval. Some even called on the BCCI to prevent the Delhi Capitals pacer from wearing the iconic number.
Virat Kohli had proudly sported the No. 18 jersey since making his Test debut 14 years ago, building a legacy as both a prolific batter and successful captain. He retired from Test cricket last month, announcing his decision via social media.
Though he admitted it wasn't easy, Kohli said stepping away "felt right" after giving his all to the format. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar later revealed that Kohli had already made up his mind back in April.
While the BCCI chose to retire Sachin Tendulkar's No. 10 jersey, Kohli's 18 remains available for future players. It's unclear whether Mukesh has officially opted to change his number - he previously wore 49 - or if this is a temporary switch.
Either way, Kohli's loyal fans were quick to express their displeasure, seeing it as a sign of disrespect to the former skipper's legacy.
''BCCI changed mukesh Kumar's jersey no. From 18 to 49. This is Embarrassing'', a fan wrote.
''I want to file a case on BCCI for giving the jersey no. 18 to a random guy called Mukesh Kumar. This is an absurd and shameful act. Please take my case madhav mishra Ji'', another user wrote on X.
Ironically, Mukesh Kumar made quite an impact while wearing the number. On Day 3 at the St Lawrence Ground in Canterbury, England Lions resumed at 237/2, with Tom Haines and Max Holden looking to press on.
Their partnership flourished early, but Mukesh turned the game around for India 'A' with a fiery spell. He picked up three wickets in just four overs, shifting momentum back in the visitors' favour.
At the lunch break, Mukesh had impressive figures of 3 for 56. Haines held firm at one end, but England Lions were reduced to 333/5, still trailing India 'A' by 224 runs.
