Sunrisers Hyderabad broke the record for the highest score in the IPL’s first six overs. They went on to break a record for Kolkata Knight Riders, who had held the top spot since 2017. SRH, who have been in top form this season, are taking opposition bowlers to the cleaners. They have already smashed three 250-plus scores this season, equalling the record of Surrey in T20 franchise cricket. Compared to the Delhi Capitals on Saturday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, SRH smashed a total of 266/7 in 20 overs. Notably, openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma piled up 125/0 in six overs of the power play. DC fell for 199, losing the contest by 67 runs. Head and Abhishek were in their element dictating the show for the Orange Army, who look like a serious outfit under Pat Cummins. Notably, SRH also posted the highest powerplay score in T20 cricket history as well. Such was the onslaught Head, and Abhishek launched on the Capitals.

SRH were on the money from the word go as DC’s left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed was toyed around for 19 runs. Spinner Lalit Yadav was introduced next and clobbered for 21 runs. South African fast bowler Anrich Nortje was welcomed in the third over for a hefty 22-run over. DC opted for two overs of spin next as both Lalit (21) and Kuldeep Yadav (20) went to the cleaners. Mukesh Kumar then conceded 22 in the final over.
Head was the chief destructor. He smashed 84 runs from 26 balls in the power play. The southpaw punctured DC with six sixes and 11 fours. On the other hand, fellow left-handed batter Abhishek smashed 40 from 10 balls in the first six overs, striking at 400.
The Sunrisers Hyderabad openers deal in only six singles in the first six overs. There was one leg bye and five dot balls. The visitors managed a total of 24 boundaries, including 13 fours and 11 maximums.
105/0 Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2017
In the IPL 2017 season, KKR demolished the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Match 46 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. The Challengers managed 158/6 in 20 overs. Head, who played for RCB that season, scored 75* while batting at number five. Umesh Yadav claimed a three-wicket haul for KKR.
On a batting-friendly surface, KKR found joy with not much pressure on the scorecard. Openers Sunil Narine and Chris Lynn came out all guns blazing. The Knights smashed 105 runs for no wicket in the powerplay. Aniket Choudhary conceded 14 runs against Lynn in the first over. Samuel Badree then bowled a tight second over, conceding six. Lynn hit three more boundaries against Yuzvendra Chahal next as KKR got 14. The madness started in the 4th over when Narine joined the party. Badree was smashed for 25 runs. Sreenath Aravind conceded 26 next before Chahal finished with 20 in the last over.
Narine slammed a 15-ball half-century and was unbeaten on 54 from 16 balls in the power play. Lynn scored 49 from 20 balls from the other end. The KKR duo smashed 19 boundaries. 11 fours and 8 sixes were hammered. Notably, there were 10 dot balls faced.
100/2 Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2014
Chennai Super Kings were the first-ever side in the cash-rich league to break the 100-run mark in the power play. They attained the milestone in the IPL 2014 season against eventual finalists Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings). The Qualifier 2 contest saw the Kings post a mammoth score of 226/6 in 20 overs. Virender Sehwag led the show with a terrific 122-run effort. CSK needed something special, and Suresh Raina delivered the goods in the power play. CSK scored 100/2 in the PP overs but eventually lost the match by 24 runs.
Faf du Plessis was dismissed on the second ball of the innings as Raina came in, and CSK ended with nine runs. Raina smashed four boundaries in the second over to help CSK purchase 18 runs. The 3rd over produced nine runs. Raina dispatched Mitchell Johnson for 20 runs next. The 5th over produced 11 runs and a wicket of Dwayne Smith, who scored 7 from 11 balls. Parvinder Awana then gave away 33 runs from the final PP over as CSK raced to 100.
Raina hit 87 runs from 25 balls in the power play. It’s still the highest individual score in the PP overs. The southpaw 12 fours and six sixes. He did all the hitting as Faf and Smith couldn’t find a single boundary. There were seven dot balls for CSK in the phase.
90/0 Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2015
In the IPL 2015 season, Chennai mustered 90 runs for the loss of no wicket against eventual champions Mumbai Indians. Match number 12 saw the Mumbai Indians ride on fifties from the blades of Rohit Sharma and Kieron Pollard to post 183/7 at the Wankhede Stadium. CSK needed solidity in the chase, and they got the job done after the openers added 109 runs. CSK scored 90/0 in the PP overs, which fuelled the chase.
Pawan Suyal opened the bowling for MI, and CSK openers Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith played out a watchful first over, scoring six runs. Lasith Malinga came in next and conceded 12. Spinner Jagadeesha Suchith was welcomed next for 11 runs. Malinga conceded 21 next as CSK raced to 50 runs in four overs. The fifth over bowled by Suchith saw CSK plunder 22 runs. Harbhajan Singh came in and gave away 18 thereafter.
Smith was in fine flow, scoring 50 from 22 balls with the help of seven fours and three sixes. McCullum hit 36 from 15 in the PP overs. He smashed six fours and a six. MI bowled 10 dot balls. CSK chased down MI’s score in 16.3 overs. They scored 189/4 eventually.
