Shubman Gill is aiming to imbibe Virat Kohli's aggression and Rohit Sharma's calmness in his captaincy as he begins his tenure in the upcoming England tour.
Gill has been appointed as the captain of the Test team following the retirement of Rohit Sharma. The 25-year-old became the 37th Test captain of India and the fifth youngest overall.
After ,Gill opened up on his learnings from previous captains Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The opening batter said that it was inspiring to see them working towards a common goal despite their varying captaincy styles.
"Both were very contrasting in terms of their style, but it was very inspiring to see both of them working towards a common goal. You want to be able to win as a captain, and your styles can be different. They were both very different, but also similar in their own sense. Virat bhai was always very aggressive, always wanting to lead from the front with hunger and passion, whereas Rohit Bhai was also aggressive, but you might not see that on their reaction or on their expressions. He was someone who was always very attacking on the field," said Gill in a video shared by the BCCI.
Furthermore, Gill also mentioned how seniors like Virat, Rohit and Ravichandran Ashwin have given them a blueprint to be successful in overseas conditions.
"Rohit bhai was someone who was very calm and tactically, always very present, and he's very communicative to the players what he wants from the players. And so these are the qualities that I learned from them. Guys like Rohit bhai, Virat bhai and Ashwin Bhai, they have given us a blueprint on how to tour away from home and win matches and series," he added.
Gill has played 32 Test matches so far and scored 1893 runs at an average of 35.05 with five hundreds and seven fifties. He has the experience of leading on five occasions in first-class cricket. He's currently leading the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025). GT are enjoying a successful season as they're ranked at the top of the points table with 18 points from 13 matches.
