Delhi: Former Team India veteran Sunil Gavaskar has given important advice to Sarfaraz Khan after being dropped from the Test team. Sarfaraz did not get a place in the team announced for the tour of England, while Karun Nair has been brought back to the team after seven years. Gavaskar believes that Sarfaraz should take inspiration from players like Karun Nair and Jaydev Unadkat, who returned to the team after long wait and hard work.
Sarfaraz made his debut in the domestic Test series against England this year, but he has not yet got a chance to play the Test on foreign land. As part of the preparations for the tour of England, he worked a lot on his fitness and diet and lost about 10 kg. He made a place in the India A team, but Karun was preferred in the main Test team.
Talking to India Today, Sunil Gavaskar said, “Jaydev Unadkat had made a Test debut at a very young age and after that it took 13 years to play the next Test. But, he continued to take wickets in domestic cricket. Karun Nair has also consecutive centuries. He has also scored big centuries.
Gavaskar said that it is the right decision to bring Karun back as he is in form and he has scored continuously.
When Sarfaraz is excluded from the team, the veteran said, “It is difficult, but this is cricket. When you get a chance, use it in such a way that no one else should talk about your place next time. It is not enough to score a century, it is necessary to prove yourself again in every innings.”
“It often happens in cricket that when the team loses a series, the first 13th, 14th, 15th players are out of the team. So it is important that whenever there is a chance, catch it and break instead of knocking on the door.”
Sarfaraz has played 6 Test matches for India so far and has scored 371 runs at an average of 37.10. He had performed brilliantly in domestic cricket, but due to injury he could not play the Ranji Trophy this time. This did not give the selectors a chance to see their recent form, which could be a reason for their ignoring.
