Ben Stokes says ‘no’ to alcohol ahead of India Tests

Stokes’ decision to quit alcohol wasn’t made lightly. The all-rounder suffered a torn left hamstring during the third Test against New Zealand in December 2024-a setback that required surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation. Reflecting on the injury, Stokes admitted on the Untapped podcast that his previous drinking habits were “all or nothing,” and he began to question whether his lifestyle was hindering his recovery.

After my first major injury, I remember the shock of it… thinking: ‘How has this happened? We did have a bit of a drink four or five nights ago, could that have played a part?’” Stokes recalled.

This moment of introspection led Stokes to a crucial decision: no alcohol until his rehab was complete and he was back on the field. While he doesn’t foresee a life of total sobriety, Stokes recognized that his body needed every advantage to heal and perform at the highest level.

It’s just getting harder to do everything. Hence why now I feel like I have to work so much harder away from the field, in the gym and all that kind of stuff to just give me the best chance of being out there to perform,” Stokes added. For him, the motivation is clear-prolonging his career and ensure he’s at his best when it matters most.
