Sunil Gavaskar, the legendary Indian cricketer, has once again highlighted that Shreyas Iyer did not get the credit he deserved for steering Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the IPL title in 2024. Iyer led KKR to success, scoring 351 runs from 14 innings.

The franchise didn’t retain Iyer, despite his exceptional performance during his tenure with KKR. He was bought by the Punjab Kings for INR Rs 26.75 crore at the mega auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. His leadership has been instrumental in the team’s remarkable performance, and he has continued to excel in Punjab’s colors. Recently, Gavaskar praised Iyer’s outstanding captaincy, highlighting his smart decisions, but noted that the credit for KKR’s success was given to others.

“He didn’t receive the recognition for last season’s IPL win. All the praise went to someone else. It’s the captain who has the greatest influence on whatever happens on the field, not someone sitting in the dugout. This year, however, he’s receiving the recognition he deserves. Nobody is giving all the credit to Ricky Ponting,” Gavaskar remarked on Star Sports.

He was referring to Gautam Gambhir, who was the mentor of the Knight Riders in the previous season.

Punjab Kings have won seven out their eleven matches under Iyer’s leadership. They are now third in the points rankings, having recorded 15 points from 11 games. He has has scored over 400 runs at an average of almost 50, including four half-centuries.

Iyer’s exceptional form and effective leadership have played a key role in Punjab’s dominance in the 18th season.
