Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's retirement from Tests has opened up a few opportunities in the India squad for the England series. India have a few back-ups for Rohit Sharma, with KL Rahul and Shubman Gill potential candidates to open the innings alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, but the No.4 remains an issue.

Karun Nair and Sai Sudharsan's names are doing rounds in the media. There is Shreyas Iyer in the fray as well after his tremendous success for India in white-ball cricket.Shreyas Iyer was dropped from the Test team after his continuous struggles against the short ball and moving deliveries. While he seems to have worked on the flaws, he is reportedly yet to win the selectors' trust in red-ball cricket. The Telegraph quoted a BCCI insider who revealed that Iyer's chances of getting picked in the India squad are not great. "If India were to play a home series, Shreyas's chances of selection would have been fine. But on an overseas tour, against the quicks, his chances don't really look great," the report quoted the BCCI insider."See, the general feeling is that he still needs to work a little bit on his red-ball game. Yes, he has been doing a brilliant job in limited overs, adapting excellently to situations. But Test cricket is a different ballgame."The short-ball aside, there will be a lot more swing and movement in England, which makes it imperative to leave the ball as well. Leaving the ball is very important when it comes to batting in England," he added."As far as Shreyas is concerned, he's a naturally aggressive player and looks to score runs quickly. So, curbing his instincts may not be that easy, and that's one aspect which could go against him before the squad gets finalised," another Board official told The Telegraph on Thursday.

Shubman Gill To Lead In England

After the retirement of Rohit Sharma, the selectors are also on the hunt for a new captain and Shubman Gill is the frontrunner to take over the leadership reins. While many have backed Jasprit Bumrah for the role, his fitness and workload management remain a concern.
